Changes To The New York City Earned Sick Time Act

The New York City Council recently amended the New York City Earned Sick Time Act to allow employees to use leave accrued under the law for additional purposes. The amendments will permit employees to use accrued time as a result of the employee or the employee’s covered family member being the victim of any act or threat of a family offense matter, sexual offense, stalking, or human trafficking. The amendments also expand the definition of “family member”. Additionally, the New York City Earned Sick Time Act is now named the New York City Earned Safe and Sick Time Act (ESSTA).

The amendments to ESSTA went into effect on May 5, 2018.

Associates can access Montefiore’s Notice of Employee Rights under ESSTA, which provides additional detail on the law, on the Intranet by going to Human Resources’ Associate Resources (Forms & Information) page or My MonteBenefits by clicking on this link.
