You may enroll for Social Security benefits at any time starting at age 62.  Apply online three months before the month you want your benefits to begin.

If you cannot enroll for Social Security benefits online, you can apply by calling 800.772.1213; TTY users 800.325.0778. Social Security representatives can make an appointment for your application to be taken over the telephone or at any convenient Social Security office from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

When you apply, you will need the following information: 

  • Your Social Security Number and birth certificate
  • Your W-2 forms
  • Your military discharge papers, if you had military service
  • Your spouse and/or children's birth certificate and Social Security Number if applying for benefits for them
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful alien status if you (or if a spouse or child applying for benefits) were not born in the U.S. 
  • Bank account number for direct deposit 

You must submit original documents or certified copies.
